Journey

Simon Cheong grew up in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. He came to faith after watching the Christian movie “The Cross and the Switchblade”. After being in the workplace for five years, he received the call to fulltime ministry.

Upon completing his theological studies at BCM, he went to Singapore to be a part of a church planting movement. After their wedding in May 1985, he and his wife Petra were sent out to Sarawak, East Malaysia to plant a new church. After settling in Sarawak for almost ten years, he gained pioneering and pastoral experience before the Lord redirected his ministry to teaching and equipping. He stepped down as the lead pastor and together with his wife went to further their studies in Australia with their two young boys. While in Melbourne, he experienced a deep work of transformation that served as a catalyst for what was to take place until today.

Upon returning from Melbourne, he served at the AG Malaysia headquarters for a brief period before joining Bible College of Malaysia, where he served as faculty, ministry director and an itinerant minister for 5 years. In the next ten years (2003-13), he joined a church-based bible school (AOIC) and served as the dean of students before becoming the President in 2012. He also served as a district officer in the Central District of the AG Malaysia for five terms. During this period he was part of the church pastoral team and completed his M Div. at TCA Singapore and Postgraduate Diploma in Practical Theology from University of Wales. He then stepped down as the President of AOIC to complete his doctoral studies at Asbury. In May 2016 he graduated with a DMin. in Preaching and Leadership from Asbury, and was subsequently recruited to be the Program Director and Associate Professor at TCA College Singapore.  In all these capacities, he is grateful to God for the opportunity and privilege to have trained many and diverse believers for Christian ministry.

His doctoral dissertation is on Interim Ministries: An Intentional Support for Managing Pastoral Transitions Among the English Speaking Congregations in the Central District of the AG Malaysia.
